Re-Seeding & Lawn Safety Tips

For lawn reseeding 101, watch the University of Minnesota’s online tutorial.

When it comes to lawn care, ensure yard safety by taking these precautions—courtesy of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute—before your mower is even on:

1. Read the operator’s manual before using any power equipment. Follow the given safety instructions and familiarize yourself with the controls before you begin.

2. Handle gas carefully. Fill up before you start and when the engine is cold.

3. Dress properly for yard work, wearing substantial shoes, long pants, and close-fitting clothes.

4. Clear the area before you mow by removing stones, sticks, and other objects from your intended path. The most common injuries are from flying debris.

5. Wear eye protection to prevent injury from projectiles.

6. Wear hearing protection to lessen damaging sounds but do not block your hearing entirely.

7. Do not listen to music, as it may distract you from hearing potentially important calls or seeing hazards.

8. Clear the area of people and pets.

9. Always start the mower outdoors.

10. Do not use alcohol, medicine, or other controlled substances that may impair your judgement when using outdoor power equipment.
