Luscious Locks

Last week I wrote about my new haircut (which I am loving!) and my reason for the change: the fact that my hair was looking thin and stringy. In the week since, I have had countless compliments telling me how thick my hair looks and just as many questions on what products are best to give thinner hair a boost. I thought I’d share a couple of the products I use every day on photo shoots to make models with thinner hair look as if they’ve had extensions put in.

First on my list is a product line called Living Proof. I was introduced to it by Sabrina Soto on a photo shoot and have used it in my professional kit ever since. My favorite product in the line is the Full Thickening Mousse. I use it on flat, lifeless hair. It’s an ultra-lightweight formula that adds a natural flexible texture to the thinnest hair, making it look full and thick. What it doesn’t do is make the hair look stiff and crunchy. I use it by applying a small amount on damp hair, working from roots to ends, then blow dry using a large round brush.

Another of my favorites is Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray. This is a heat-activated product. I use it at the roots in combination with Living Proof to add long-lasting volume for fuller hair styles. Apply this product on damp hair only, and before blow drying.

Last, and certainly not least, is Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. This is an invisible alternative to dry shampoo that builds incredible volume and really sexy texture. What’s great about this product is that it doesn’t leave a powdery matte finish like other dry shampoos, and the product actually absorbs oil at the roots, which makes it the perfect touch-up bag companion (it comes in a perfect 2.2-ounce purse size). And the smell is luxurious. Use it once hair has been styled to add both volume and texture.

These three products alone or in combination really could be thin hair’s fairy godmother. Here’s a before-and-after of a model I was working on just today:
