Timeless Travel

Lately, I have been thinking about investing in a good set of luggage. In preparation for this year’s travel plans, I’ve been searching for something small and practical that will stand the test of time. I’d also like my luggage to look good as it lugs my stuff from city to city. I’m traveling to Nashville next weekend, and thought I’d share the two bags that have caught my eye.

I spent some time drooling over Filson and J.W. Hulme at NorthernGRADE a few weeks ago, which very well could have sparked my interest in this investment. Both companies deliver on quality, style, and durability.

J.W. Hulme’s bags are in a league of their own. The quality and craftsmanship found in each bag truly exemplifies the expertise that comes from a 100-year legacy of hands-on experience. I’m really interested in their medium duffle bag. As J.W. Hulme’s sturdiest piece of luggage, it’s also a total showstopper. While the price is a hefty one, running at $1,050 for the medium size, I consider this bag something you’d keep for a lifetime, and then pass on to your children’s children. Interesting fact: The duffle bag is also referred to as “duffel,” named after the Belgian city where the fabric used to make leather utility bags originated.

Filson’s durable materials, tough closures, zippers, and pulls would withstand the beating of the 10-day trip to Europe I’m taking this summer. Made from 22-ounce, 100 percent cotton oil-finish Rugged Twill, the bag is water repellent and tough as nails. The style is both relaxed and classic at the same time. The outer and side pockets are great for magazines or newspapers. At $535, it’s worthy of investing in a carry-on bag that looks good while standing the test of time. I’m definitely leaning toward this bag for the price and durability.

So, friends, what do you think? J.W. Hulme’s medium duffle bag or Filson’s wheeled carry-on? Cast your votes below!
