A Cure for the Winter Blahs

I love winter. I honestly do. I love the scarves and hot chocolate; the extra wool blankets, thick socks, and tall boots. I love winter in Minnesota, especially. As a Chicago native, I’m still amazed by how active and vibrant the Twin Cities remains with events like the Loppet and NorthernGRADE this past weekend.

But as much effort as I put into enjoying the frozen Minnesota months, February rolls around, and I get a case of the Blahs.

We all know the feeling: that lazy, sleepy, downright “yuck” associated with lack of sunlight. Coupled with lingering sniffles and a demanding schedule, we have to combat the winter Blahs from a number of different angles. We get our sleep. Drink vitamin C. Go to yoga. Wear bright colors. Exercise. Avoid depressing music.

I’d be lying if I said that last tip was a no-brainer for me. I struggle with this one, and so do many people I know. The weather gets crappy, and all I want to do is listen to the most depressing album I can find. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and music is one of the best ways to stay upbeat. That said, I pulled together a playlist of shamelessly catchy and danceable tunes for us today. So let’s all take in an earful of fizzy pop music and do our best Beyonce hip swivel to bring on all those good happy-inducing endorphins.

1. “Closer,” Tegan & Sara
2. “Crazy In Love,” Beyonce (How could I not after that Super Bowl performance?)
3. “Satellites,” Catcall
4. “Live Your Life,” Yuna
5. “Bright Lights, Bigger City,” CeeLo Green
6. “Don’t Save Me,” Haim
7. “Titanium,” David Guetta (featuring Sia)
8. “Anything Could Happen,” Ellie Goulding
