North Shore and Brainerd Taprooms

Taprooms aren’t just opening in droves in the Twin Cities (check out our complete guide)—Rachel and John have the scoop on where to drink when you’re headed to the North Shore this summer.

Duluth’s Vikre Distillery (which Rachel and John chatted about a few weeks ago) is joined by Canal Park Brewing, a family-oriented restaurant and brewery with a killer lake view. Nearby Bent Paddle Brewing is farther off the beaten path but has an irresistible outdoor, independent feel. Head up the shore to stop by Castle Danger Brewery, where they’re brewing a crisp, refreshing cream ale ideal for a post-hike treat.

Near Brainerd, Gull Dam Brewing in Nisswa (try the Scotch ale, which uses maple syrup) and Jack Pine Brewing in Baxter are bare-bones operations (think: folding chairs), but the beer selection is abundant at each. And for the beer-lover in your life Jack Pine is using glass growlers to make lamps and bird feeders—Father’s Day gifts, perhaps?
