Super [Bowl] Sized Shopping: January 29-February 4

A million visitors are expected to swarm Minneapolis for the Super Bowl LII over the next week—and local retail is ready to make the most of it. From the Mall of America down to indie boutiques, here’s what retailers are doing to capture out-of-town dollars, broken down by area:

Downtown & North Loop: 

North Local Market @ City Center: Local retailers and brands are taking advantage of City Center’s empty storefronts with several pop-up shops. Located on the first level of the center, North Local Market features more than 35 top local makers and retail brands, including Leather Works Minnesota leather goods, Fringe & Fettle Ceramics, Worker B honey and skincare, Sanborn Canoe Co. hand-painted canoe paddles, Eyebobs eyewear, Sota ClothingSven Clogs, and heritage bagmaker, J.W. Hulme Co. Smile Network International will showcase a selection of fair-trade goods, similar to its Inspire: Global Gifts for Urban Adventures gift shop, plus handcrafted jewelry, decor, and apparel from gift shop JeromeoDenise Houser Design women’s apparel, House of Talents fair-trade baskets from Ghana, Wakami fair-trade jewelry, and Julia Knight Collection. The Hippy Feet Warming House: Shop goods from six local brands at this tented pop-up on Nicollet Mall organized by Minneapolis-based philanthropic sock brand, Hippy Feet. Other featured brands include UNRL, My Sister, Woodchuck USA, Minnesota Alumni Market, and Mxers Audio. MartinPatrick3: The North Loop men’s and home store is hosting several events tied to the Super Bowl throughout the week. Many of the store’s featured brands such as Boglioli, Theory, Vince, Bogner, and Jack Mason, will be on site for special events. The store hosts a free benefit for Kill Kancer with John Varvatos and Baccarat crystal (Monday from 5–9 p.m.) and a benefit hosted by Minnesota Wild player Jason Zucker with Eleventy and the spring launches of Fisher + Baker and Rodd & Gunn (Thursday from 5–9 p.m.). Askov Finlayson: North Loop store Aksov Finlayson can be partially credited for this year’s Super Bowl theme, “Bold North.” Its “Keep the North Cold” initiative gives money to local organizations that fight climate change, and recently the company has committed $1 million to the cause over the next five years as part of its new “Give 110%” program. It even partnered on a “North”-themed line with Target leading up to the Super Bowl. On Tuesday night, grab your “North” hat and celebrate the “Bold North” with a kickoff party at the store’s courtyard. The free, open-to-the-public event features hot chili from the Bachelor Farmer, bonfires, music, warm cocktails from Marvel Bar, and AF’s new Fair State Brewing Cooperative collaboration beer, Keep the North Cold, on tap. Rosenthal Interiors: Downtown Minneapolis home and design showroom, Rosenthal Interiors, is showcasing handcrafted goods and original fine art by local makers and artists alongside its selection of European home furnishings during Super Bowl weekend. “Contemporary Pop’t Arts” includes artwork by 15 local artists including Kristi Abbott, Toni Dachis, and Barbara Kreft, plus unique goods from ethical women’s fashion boutique, Hazel & Rose, local jewelry maker, Koonyai Studio, home interiors designer, Carter Averbeck of Omforme Design, and handmade hats by Hat Make, and live performances in the store’s windows. Thursday–Saturday from 4–7:30 p.m. @ Rosenthal Interiors, 22 N. Hubert White: The century-old menswear store takes advantage of its location smack-dab in the middle of Super Bowl festivities on Nicollet Mall to host a spring/summer trunk show featuring exclusive capsule collections from Italian suiting house, Ermenegildo Zegna. The event features new seasonal made-to-measure fabrics, made-to-measure denim, the latest from Z Zegna, and Pelle Tessuta. Mall of America: 

The Mall of America will be buzzing with Super Bowl activity this week. The Best Buy store will showcase the “ultimate man cave” in the Tech Zone in the mall’s rotunda to provide inspiration for shoppers for the ultimate TV viewing experience, Macy’s will host athletes for personal appearances, and West Market Square area will be set up to give people the experience of standing on the field in the US Bank Stadium in a 4D Super Bowl Dome Experience. (Oh, and the Eagles and Patriots are staying at the MOA’s two hotels, so there’s a chance you could spot some players.) Casper bedding is hosting a pop-up sleep center with a limited-edition cashmere throw through Super Bowl Sunday, while locally owned boutique Mona Williams will host a sale from designer handbag resaler Jax Warehouse featuring bags from Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton marked 50 to 90 percent off original prices (Thursday–next Monday). You can also shop locally made goods at two pop-ups through Feb. 9—RAAS Local Market, featuring nearly 20 top Minnesota makers, including Fringe and Fettle CeramicsMill City FineriesNorthern Glasses, Leather Works Minnesota, Worker B, and Still Kickin, and a Faribault Woolen Mill Co. store, filled with the heritage brands’ throws, scarves, bags, and accessories. Galleria: 

Edina’s luxury shopping center, Galleria, is getting into the Super Bowl action with football player appearances, special displays, in-store events, and a fashion show. Scheherazade Jewelers is hosting an estate jewelry event featuring pieces from Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Retro, and Cocktail periods, plus contemporary treasures and exotic gems (Wednesday–Sunday). On Friday afternoon, watch the wives and partners of pro football players walk the runway in looks from Galleria stores, styled and produced by Grant Whittaker, with the proceeds going to a local nonprofit. Minny & Paul Studio: Minny & Paul is known for their custom-made birch boxes filled with Minnesota-made goods by some of the area’s top makers, each with a different theme. For the Super Bowl, the brand created two boxes featuring Minnesota essentials that serve as both an introduction of Minnesota brands to the out-of-town visitor as well as a keepsake for locals. Hazel & Rose: For Super Bowl weekend, ethical fashion boutique Hazel & Rose hosts local design brand Dinosaur Hampton for a one-day custom embroidery pop-up. Designer Benjamin Kelly will be on hand to custom embroidery on shirts, bandanas, tees, and jackets, created on-site. Bring your own garment or purchase a vintage tee or shirt from Hazel & Rose for customization. (Embroidery prices start at $10.) Hazel & Rose will also debut an exclusive collaborative capsule collection with Dinosaur Hampton featuring five one-of-a-kind pieces. Winsome Goods Studio Storefront: Local women’s wear brand, Winsome Goods, returns after a month away for a reopening reception at its studio and storefront. New Rules: Multi-purpose creative space, New Rules, is hosting a night of local art, guest DJs, designer and retail pop-ups, and NFL player appearances. Celebrity eyewear designers (and Minnesota natives) Coco & Breezy will make a special appearance with a DJ set and pop-up of their buzzworthy frames, which count Rihanna, Jaden Smith, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj as fans.
