This week marks the grand opening of the newly renovated Aveda Experience Center at Southdale. The center is a prototype of the Minnesota-based, natural beauty brand’s new retail concept, which the company plans to roll out nationwide throughout 2017. The new concept emphasizes a series of “experience zones” spotlighting Aveda’s various product categories—haircare, skincare, cosmetics, and its line of chakra body mists. The center also features a “community table” where guests can recharge with a stress-relieving ritual, hang out, try out products, and get advice and tips from Aveda experts. And as always, Aveda’s full product line is available to purchase. Thursday’s grand opening open house event features complimentary bites, drinks, music, and tours of the new store. In other news, 2017 seems to becoming a transitional year in the national retail landscape—recent nationwide store closings include American Apparel, Macy’s, Sears, Kmart, The Limited, and JCPenney’s. On a local level, the biggest news is the closing of Macy’s flagship store on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis, which is expected to shutter in March. Following the recent opening of an updated food-and-book concept at Edina’s Galleria comes the news that Barnes & Noble will be closing its Nicollet Mall location when its lease runs out in May. Williams-Sonoma, which just opened a new location at Ridgedale last summer, closed its Mall of America location yesterday. After a brief run, locally owned Wayzata shop Paper + Cloth closed in December, and less than a year after opening a new location in North Loop, Roe Wolfe boutique has unexpectedly announced it would close after finding out its building was purchased. (After closing in mid-February, it will open a six-month pop-up shop at Galleria in early March.) And over the weekend, luxury perfume boutique La Petite Parfumerie announced it will close at the end of the month. (See details on store closing sales below.)
