You might find us jetting off to Cambridge, Mass. on September 24th to enter a starting bid of only $300 for a collection of unpublished photographs of the Royal Wedding of Charles and Diana. This unique collection of fourteen original candid, behind-the-scenes photos from the wedding reception of Princess Diana and Prince Charles will be featured in an upcoming live auction event from Boston-based RR Auction.
The candid shots were taken by Lord Patrick Lichfield, the Queen’s first cousin once removed. He was the only photographer allowed to take informal images of the royal family and their guests when they returned to Buckingham Palace following the July 29, 1981 wedding ceremony. The images were discarded from the official wedding album presented to Charles and Diana and never released to the public. These outtakes have been kept in a private album by Lord Patrick’s assistant for over 30 years, who was given the prints by her boss after developing them for him.
The collection up for auction consists of informal behind-the-scenes family photos including seven black-and-white glossy photos, five color satin-finish photos, and the pass used by Lichfield’s assistant for access to the royal palace.
Our favorite shots include two showing Queen Elizabeth watching a small television which is broadcasting images of the massive crowd outside and another showing Princess Diana in the Throne Room as her dress designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel arrange the train in preparation for the formal photographs. A rare glimpse of the private side of this very public wedding.
The Remarkable Rarities live auction event from RR Auction will be held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Cambridge, MA on September 24, 2015. The photographs will be sold in a single lot, with a current estimate of $1,000-$2,000, but they are expected to sell for much more. Will we see you there?
