Designer Jummy Thomas's debut collection for Saint Ola

For the past few years, minimalism has reigned on the runways. But as more designers are embracing color, pattern, and embellishment, fashion is moving in a more fun, vibrant direction.

Local fashion fans got a taste of what's to come during designer Jummy Thomas's recent fashion presentation for spring/summer 2017, held at the W Minneapolis hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The event served to launch Thomas's Saint Ola label with a runway show and pop-up shop, where show goers could shop pieces from the designer's earlier collections. The Nigeria native, Minneapolis-based designer presented a collection that combined elements of her heritage, such as colorful African-inspired prints, with modern elements, such as sporty mesh fabric, asymmetrical hems, and architectural silhouettes. Thomas smartly offered her own, unique take on current trends, as in an off-the-shoulder, white mesh dress with flounced sleeves and a teal vest-and-pant combination that offered an updated take on the classic tuxedo. But my favorite piece from the collection—a pair of bell bottom pants rendered in teal mesh—was worn by the designer herself as she took her turn on the runway.

The production of the show was polished and professional. Following the runway portion of the event, models were arranged on pedestals, offering attendees the chance to glimpse Thomas's impeccable construction up close.

While many local designers tend to show collections that are available on a custom-order basis only, Thomas says that she is manufacturing the collection in full size runs. Some of the pieces will be ready for purchase beginning April 25, with more items for order and preorder being added to her site throughout the month of April. Visit to check for new arrivals and pre-order items.

From the professional production to the well-made, stylish, unique pieces on the runway, Saint Ola's Jummy Thomas is certainly one to watch.
