Hair Necessity: Head Gear

Hair is a woman’s most important accessory—that is, until she finds the perfect hat!

Much like a great haircut, hats deserve the same amount of attention when choosing one that is perfect for your head. Consider the basics, including face shape, standout features, head size, and how your hair will be displayed. Most women tend to believe that their face shape is more round than reality.

If the mirror doesn’t reflect a perfect oval, choose a hat with asymmetry. This fall’s trends are in your favor with many off-center shapes.

If long locks are your standard, choose a hat with a bit of extra room to don the disappearing hair act. Tuck the bulk of your hair into a soft bun or braid just above the nape of your neck and hide the ends under a hat of your choice for an instant short ‘do.

Let fringy, face-framing strands drop below your chin for the faux bob. If the illusion of short isn’t your swag, create a few loose waves, starting mid-strand or a disheveled equestrian-style braid to accompany your new accessory.

Just in time for fall, lucky Minnesotans will be receiving an Uptown treat! Goorin Brothers, specializing in handcrafted hats, will be opening their doors in the Uptown Theater Building at Hennepin and Lagoon avenues. The family business dates back more than 100 years with roots planted deep in the creative community of San Francisco. I first fell in love with Goorin hats in Chicago and I’m ecstatic to support this midwest location.

Until then, I have compiled a collection of inspiration images for the fall/winter hat search. My lust list includes something inspired by menswear with leather detailing, a sleek piece with eye-catching geometry, and a tweed topper that Grandpa would have worn on Sunday afternoon. What’s on your list?
