Varsity Style

Like most Midwesterns, the changing of the seasons is my favorite part of living here. Partly because it involves a change of dress. We’ll be seeing our favorite designers and retailers unveil their pre-fall products next month. I’m on the lookout for three items in particular—ones that embrace a twist on college-prepster meets tomboy-chic.

1. The Varsity Jacket.
They’ve been around for a couple of seasons, but I’m just now coming around to the very minimal take on this jock-inspired look. I’m especially loving the tone-on-tone look of this OAK varsity jacket, with the contrast of wool and leather. It is textural, subtle, and in step with the monochromatic trends we’re seeing.

2. The Backpack.
I’m swapping my purse for a backpack this fall. There are endless styles out there right now, but I’m particularly loving the one-shoulder bag. Look for a strap that can be converted into two so you can wear it both ways. The slouchy hobo style eases the feeling that you’re off to first period in the morning.

3. The High Top.
Comfortable footwear is back, and I want to hug the people responsible for it! I love this trend, especially because it adds a little sportiness to my go-to outfits. I’m planning to wear these with waxed jeans, shorts, and skirts this fall as we transition into cooler temperatures. I’d recommend trying a pair with a little lift in the back—it’s slimming and adds a little style.
