His and Hers

Shall we say two’s a trend this time? I’m going to, because I absolutely love this concept: the his/hers events. And it doesn’t surprise me that these events come from shops that  ended up in the magazine’s 2011 Best Of list.

We already know I can’t get enough of Mighty Swell, and this is in part because the stylish ladies who run it, Meghan McAndrews and Rae Alexis Danneman (also known as High Plains Thrifter and Bourbon & Lace) are creative, clever, and have a seemingly endless supply of energy. Their his and hers events are looking quite tempting, so I want to share them with you immediately:

This weekend, January 27 (5 to 9 p.m.) and 28 (12 to 5 p.m.) the shop will be open for the gentlemen. Free beer to shoppers over 21 and Danny Sigelman will DJ, plus sell a selection of vintage vinyl for (mostly) $10 or less. Greenwich Vintage, It’s For Nice, and Things I Found at The Thrift Store—plus High Plains Thrifter and Bourbon & Lace will be selling all manner of manly goods, including clothes, outerwear, shoes, accessories, and home décor.  Handsome!

Then for the ladies: Mark your calendars for February 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. The shop will be filled with all kinds of sweet nothings. Think: caftans, slips, robes, nighties, garter belts, et cetera, in the most lovely vintage styles. Vendors include High Plains Thrifter, Bourbon & Lace, Atty’s Vintage, and Patterns Vintage + Resale. Pin-up hair stylist Soraya Hatfield will style shoppers with retro updos (for a fee; but if I know these girls it will be affordably priced).  Plus, champagne and sweet treats. How can you go wrong?

Mighty Swell, 3109 E. 42nd St., Mpls.

Then there’s Flirt Boutique at Selby & Snelling, which has long been one of my favorite boutiques in town. On Thursday, February 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., owner Jessica Gerard will be hosting Lipstick & Lace, the ladies’ pre-Valentine’s Day event. Nibble chocolate from Chocolat Celeste and sip champagne from Solo Vino, and shop the incredible selection of lingerie and loungewear. Plus, meet Flirt’s newest neighbor, Kae at Brow Chic, who will advise you on the perfect lip color for your pout and give you a little lipstick lesson.

But gentlemen, I’ve heard how intimidating it can be to walk into what feels like a ladies-only zone to buy something special for Valentine’s Day. I also know you can walk into Flirt any day of the week and get great service and a guaranteed spectacular gift. But to take the edge off, stop by Flirt from 6 to 8 p.m. on February 10 for Guy’s Night Out. Solo Vino will be providing Scotch for your shopping experience, and Stogie’s on Grand will send you home with a cigar. Flirt will send you home with some showstopping Valentine’s Day gifts for your sweetie. It’s a win-win.
