My favorite local Doctor of Design—Stephanie Lake, Ph.D., Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture—has a trunk show coming up. Do. Not. Miss. Capital letters, separate sentences for each word of that announcement—did you notice the emphasis? I’m so serious. Her pieces are mostly sold by appointment, and online, so this is a wonderful way to meet Stephanie and talk to her about the stories behind her designs.
Last fall, I fell in love with a pair of earrings (at right), which I featured in this One Dress, Two Ways. They’re still on the market! This is your chance! I also featured these two stunning agate necklaces in our December Gift Guide.
But she has designed a museum-load of other beauties, so I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. I have long admired Lake’s adherence to glamour—she lands squarely in the “more is more” camp—but in the most purposeful way. And she designs from the gut: She’s told me that once she knows she wants to keep it for herself, it’s done. Love that.
I love that each of her pieces has a history—hence my mention that each has a backstory. Each piece is one of a kind, as she digs up source materials at trade shows, antiques sales, estate sales, and more. Which means each piece contains an intriguing design piece or construction detail.

The trunk show is raising money and awareness for the MN Breast Cancer Awareness Association, which provides easy access to important, accurate information about breast health and breast cancer to those diagnosed with the disease—the organization also works to enhance the quality of life for survivors. Proceeds from sales—including proceeds from a special drink called the Birch’s Breastini—will go to the charity, but it’s also a great chance to connect with the founders and talk to them about their admirable mission.
