The Yarn Bus

Local artist, Knitteapolis, has partnered with Metro Transit to transform an ordinary public bus into a foresty wonderland for bus riders all over the Twin Cities to experience. With her creative stamp known as a “yarn bomb,” Knitteapolis (who prefers to keep her identity a secret) has been decorating Minneapolis with her soft street art for a few years now. Her work can be seen on stop signs, bike racks, and other stationary objects around Minneapolis.

The Yarn Bus is special because it’s Knitteapolis’ first moving art project. The poles and handles on the bus are carefully wrapped in bright green yarn, and colorful flowers, vines, mushrooms, and birds are attached to the greenery for a forest-like feel. The best part of the Yarn Bus is its surprise factor—from the outside it looks like an everyday Metro Transit bus, but riders won’t discover the crafty interior until they step aboard.

“The point of the bus,” Knitteapolis posted on her Facebook page in celebration of its debut, “is to create joy and bring an unexpected smile to everyone in the Twin Cities. That’s it!”

The Yarn Bus debuted on October 4 and will continue to rotate bus routes through the end of November. For those interested in exploring Knitteapolis’ creation, Metro Transit will be partnering with MNCommunity to host an Instameet at Como Dockside Pavillion in St. Paul on October 23.

Bus riders and visitors are encouraged to take pictures of the bus and their experience and post them on social media using the official hashtag #yarnbus. Learn more about the project at metrotransit.org and follow metrotransitmn and knitteapolis on Instagram for more photos and updates.
